Growth Through Knowledge lectures scheduled

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and the Westmoreland Diversity Coalition are hosting the Growth Through Knowledge and Understanding speaker series. This year, the speakers will explore the lived experiences of people who have traditionally been the targets of biases and hate crimes, which forces them to become marginalized in our society. The series will also share the experiences of people who have been victims of crime, people with physical and mental disabilities, and people who have been incarcerated. Lectures will be offered virtually at 7 p.m. on four upcoming Wednesdays, and there is no cost. Preregistration is required at wdcoalition.org/wd-events/. Upcoming speakers include: Sept. 28, Hispanic Populations presented by Monica Ruiz, executive director of Casa San Jose; Oct. 12, The Impact of Gender-Based Violence on Women, presented by Kristin Malone-Boadair, of the Blackburn Center; Oct. 19, Hate What I’ve Done. Support What I Can Become, presented by Dr. Tim Holler, associate professor of Criminal Justice at Pitt-Greensburg and director of the Community Arts and Reintegration Project; Nov. 9 – Physical & Mental Disabilities, with speaker to be determined.

Waynesburg U. hosting overnight visitation

Waynesburg University will offer an overnight visitation opportunity to prospective students Sunday and Monday, Nov. 13 and 14. Visiting students will have the opportunity to experience life on Waynesburg’s campus and see what day-to-day life as an undergraduate student is like. Prospective students will spend the night with student ambassadors, athletes and students, all of whom have been approved and cleared by the university. Interested students should apply at waynesburg.edu/overnightvisit.

LH student recognized for academic excellence

Brayden M. Russell, a student at Laurel Highlands High School, was named a commended student in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. Russell is a senior at the high school, and among 34,000 students throughout the national being recognized for exceptional academic excellence through the program.
