The Masontown American Legion Auxiliary Unit 423 has named Laken Hackney the Poppy Princess 2023.

Hackney is a fourth grade student at George J. Plava Elementary School in the Albert Gallatin Area School District. She was also a participant in the auxiliaryĢƵ Americanism essay contest, writing about “What does patriotism mean to you?” Hackney is active in dancing, basketball, softball and theater.

Hackney resides in McClellandtown with mother Tracey Hackney and Daniel Reese, and with her father William Coburn in Masontown. She is the great granddaughter of Navy Seaman Marlin “Bud” Hackney who served on the USS Sampson, New York.

Hackney will participate in the Masontown Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 29 at 10 a.m. alongside Auxiliary Unit 423 members.

She and Americanism Auxiliary participant Arabella Gulino will distribute poppies on Friday, May 26 at Shoppers Value and Dollar General in Masontown. All donations received from the red poppies will be used to support local veterans and active duty personnel with various needs.
