Students at Frazier High School will perform their take on a classic fairytale during the musical “Once Upon a Mattress” in late March.
The show is an adaptation of the 1835 Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea,” set in a fictional medieval kingdom in the 15th century. Queen Aggravain tests every potential bride for her son Prince Dauntless, and no one in the kingdom can marry until she approves of his future spouse.
The queen has would-be princesses take part in a number of tests they’re certain to fail – until one of the tests requires the young maiden to sleep on a pile of 20 mattresses with a pea under them.
The classic musical comedy will be performed by veteran actors and actresses of the high school drama program, and each will have a chance to shine.
“The high school students are particularly excited for this show because each role highlights their individual singing, acting and dancing talents,” said Director Vincent Rafail.
In addition, they’ve invited the middle school drama club to join them, offering a special opportunity to future high school thespians.
“The middle school students are excited to be in the high school production,” Rafail said.
This year, there will be a few changes during the shows.
“We are expanding our concession and fundraising opportunities. If individuals or businesses would like to donate or sponsor, they can email me at vrafail@fraziersd.org by March 1 to discuss options,” Rafail said.
“Once Upon a Mattress” will be on stage March 28 at 6 p.m. and March 29 at 2 and 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
