Waynesburg Lions Club helps strengthen the community
For 85 years, members of the Waynesburg Lions Club have focused on doing one thing: serving the community.
“We do anything we can do in the community that will bring fellowship,” Kathy McClure, president of the club said.
McClure said one of the clubĢƵ biggest events is the Sounds of Summer Concert Series, a weekly event at Lions Club Community Park on East Oakview Drive in Waynesburg. The series features live music, food and fun, she said. Members also volunteer to help with WaynesburgĢƵ Fourth of July event, and the club hosts a Fall Festival complete with pumpkin painting, a hay maze and other family-friendly activities, McClure said.
In addition, the 70 members of the Waynesburg club participate in the broader initiatives of Lions International. They collect and refurbish eyeglasses and deliver them to those in need, hold vision screenings and offer assistance with eyewear prescriptions.
They also recycle plastic from local organizations. That plastic eventually becomes a recycled bench, said McClure, noting several have already been placed throughout Greene County.
In addition, the Waynesburg Lions Club awards two scholarships to high school students each year.
Although fundraising is not the Lions’ main focus, according to McClure, club members do reach out to the community for sponsorships. Volunteers are also welcomed to help at the clubĢƵ events, she said.
“We have a motto: ‘Not above you, not beneath you, but with you.’ ItĢƵ a reminder that we’re here for each other,” McClure said. “We want the community to attend our events and enjoy time with their families and each other.”
