Two people were killed in separate vehicle crashes over the weekend, including a Springfield Township teenager.

Nicholas Herman, 17, died in a motorcycle crash near Jim Mountain Road in Springfield Township that occurred around 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

Fayette County Coroner Dr. Bob Baker said the motorcycle Herman was riding was the only vehicle involved. State police have not released details of what occurred.

Nick’s mother, Elizabeth Herman described her son as a “free spirit” who was “full of life.” She said her son had plans to work on the pipeline with his cousin and had aspirations of joining the Marines.

“He was a great kid that was loved by many,” she said

The organizer of a echoed those sentiments and called the teen “a great kid who deserved more time on this earth to live his life.”

The second crash, which occurred around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, took the life of Kristopher Michael John, 31, of Republic.

State police said he was traveling south on Route 166 in Redstone Township when he lost control, hit a guardrail, and skidded 140 feet before hitting a utility pole. The impact split the pole, causing the upper half to fall onto John’s vehicle, which caught fire.

Police said John was found partially outside the vehicle leading investigators to believe he attempted to escape.

John was the lone passenger in the vehicle, police indicated.
