A total of 19,643 voters made their way to the polls for Tuesday’s primary election, which accounts for 24.75% of Fayette County’s electorate, said Mary Beth Kuznik, director of the county’s election bureau.

Both parties had similar turnouts, with 9,842 Democrats voting and 9,801 Republicans.

There were only two contested races on the county level. According to unofficial results, Jon Marietta, the incumbent record of deeds, secured the Republican nomination for the office with 4,820 votes. Opponent Christina Becker received 4,074 votes. Marietta will go on to face James Santilli, the only Democrat on the ballot, in the fall.

Trinette Schmidt-Cunningham, incumbent Democrat jury commissioner, received the party’s nod on Tuesday. She received 4,843 votes, besting challenger Coreyann Fluker.

In Greene County, Waynesburg attorney Chris Simms won both the Republican and Democratic nominations for Greene County Court of Common Pleas judge during Tuesday’s primary, paving the way for him to take the bench at the courthouse next January.

Simms easily defeated fellow attorney Patrick Fitch in the Republican primary, while also cross-filing as an uncontested Democratic candidate to also win that nomination.

By winning both nominations, he is now poised to become the next judge in Greene County, replacing outgoing President Judge Lou Dayich, who announced earlier this year he was retiring from the bench after being elected in 2015 and serving one term on the bench.

With all 42 precincts reporting Tuesday night, Simms won 59.4% of the vote in the Republican primary compared to the 40.6% for Fitch, who is a public defender in Washington County.

Simms, 39, is currently a partner at Pollock Morris Belletti & Simms law firm in Waynesburg. He graduated from West Greene High School and Washington & Jefferson College, and earned his law degree from Duquesne University.

Washington County Judge Brandon Neuman, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary for state Superior Court but received the most votes from any statewide candidate with 823,710, will now face Clarion County attorney Maria Battista in November.

Neuman, 43, of North Strabane, will now compete against Battista in the general election after she defeated Chester County President Judge Ann Marie Wheatcraft in the Republican primary.
