Scott Weiland — ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year’
Every year as part of my holiday tradition, I select a new Christmas album to add to my already extensive holiday music catalog. While searching for this year’s addition, one particular album caught my eye.
I’ve always been a fan of Scott Weiland as lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, so when I discovered he had released a collection of Christmas classics, my search was over with great satisfaction.
My holiday joy quickly turned to disappointment as “The Christmas Song” opened the album with as much bliss as finding a lump of coal in your carefully hung stocking.
What followed was an exercise in affliction as Weiland attempted to croon other favorites like “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “White Christmas,” “Silent Night” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”
My initial thought was Weiland should stick with what he knows. My second thought was to press the stop button and have a silent night.
Weiland’s attempt to venture outside his comfort zone is to be applauded. Unfortunately, what probably sounded like a good idea at the time, quickly unfolded into a collection of holiday favorites that could have passed for bland, vanilla karaoke offerings. Turns out the most wonderful time of the year is when Weiland refrains from singing Christmas carols.
