Shinedown — ‘Amaryllis’
The amped-up intensity of the opener, “Adrenaline,” sets the pace for the Florida quartet’s fourth album. “Give me the wheel so we can move a little faster,” snarls Brent Smith as “Amaryllis” begins fast and furious.
The dramatically potent vocals of Smith fuel the 12-track set of aggressively hard-edged arrangements that inspire a fury of fist pumps and head nods. Back is veteran producer Rob Cavallo, who previously worked with the band on 2008’s “The Sound of Madness.” The hook-heavy material embraces Smith’s impassioned vocals, as well as Zach Myers’ fiery guitar riffs.
The band punches out fast-paced rockers as well as some great power ballads with sweeping melodies and full orchestration. The album’s first single, “Bully,” is a stirring rocker that addresses the timely and controversial topic of dealing with bullies. “Unity,” the album’s second single, is an inspirational anthem directed at thanking the band’s fans for their support and dedication. “Through the Ghost” closes the album in stark contrast to the chaotic opener. The lush orchestrations highlight Smith’s tender vocals as he hauntingly sings, “The world will never know you like I do.” With “Amaryllis,” Shinedown shows bands like Nickelback and Creed exactly how to deliver alternative rock with purpose and substance.
