Ben Kweller — ‘Go Fly a Kite’
The fifth solo album from Ben Kweller is a distinct departure from the country leanings of the singer-songwriter’s last album “Changing Horses.”
“Go Fly a Kite” features an infectious collection of power-pop arrangements with healthy doses of irresistible fun. Kweller maintains a pleasantly relaxed tempo throughout the album filled with touches of rock and alt-country sounds. The opener, “Mean to Me,” is a straight-up rocker with feisty electric guitars grinding out an explosive accompaniment to Kweller’s charming vocals. Personally, I haven’t heard an album this satisfying since last year’s Butch Walker and the Black Widows'”The Spade.” Both artists have a flair for cleverly crafting songs with smart lyrics and memorable choruses.
Songs such as the harmonically delightful “Out the Door” and “Gossip” are reminiscent of early Ryan Adams.
Kweller’s alt-county style is most evident on the Pure Prairie League-sounding “Full Circle,” evoking memories of the band’s 1975 Top 40 hit “Amie.”
Planted within the electric guitar-influenced numbers are the ballads “The Rainbow” and “I Miss You.”
As good as Kweller is navigating at a steadier pace, he truly shines when he’s stripped down and bearing his heart and perceptions. “I just want you to know that I am still the same,” sings Kweller on the closer “You Can Count on Me.”
It’s refreshing to know that while Kweller matures and refines his sound, he can still be counted on to deliver first-rate material.
