Pianist, composer and arranger Billy Childs pays tribute to Laura Nyro by assembling an all-star cast of performers on “Map to the Treasure: Reimaging Laura Nyro.”

Childs lovingly adopts the legendary songwriterĢƵ engaging arrangements and reinvents the emotional messages in a masterful way, allowing NyroĢƵ lyrical genius to be heard and understood in a completely new and revealing manner.

I’ve often described Nyro as the female counterpart to Nick Drake with her simplistic, dark, revealing and fragile songs with touches of gospel, soul, folk, R&B and jazz.

Richly textured stories carefully unfold in the capable hands of artists such as Becca Stevens, Wayne Shorter, Lisa Fischer, Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Shawn Colvin, Ledisi and Chris Botti.

The album opens with soprano Renee Fleming and cellist Yo-Yo Ma offering up a passionate love letter to New York on “New York Tendaberry.”

Rickie Lee Jones and Chris Potter impressively capture the darkness and isolation of addiction on “Been on a Train.”

Backed by the masterful and steadfast musicianship of Dean Parks on guitar, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Childs on piano, the arrangements take on a new life by conforming comfortably to the style of each guest artist.

“And When I Die” closes the album with Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas adding personal touches of bluegrass and jazz to NyroĢƵ hauntingly beautiful arrangement that became a huge hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears back in 1969.

Nyro recorded her first album in 1966 at the age of 19 and performed at the Monterey International Pop Music Festival the following year.

Her songs have been covered by artists like Three Dog Night, Suzanne Vega, Phoebe Snow, Rosanne Cash, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, George Duke, Thelma Houston and Maynard Ferguson. Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
