“Traveling While Black,” a cinematic virtual reality experience, opens at 820 Liberty Gallery in Pittsburgh on Friday, May 19.

Viewers can immerse themselves in the long history of restriction of movement for Black Americans, and the creation of safe spaces in our communities.

The film from Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams, and Emmy Award-winning Felix & Paul Studios transports viewers to historic BenĢƵ Chili Bowl restaurant in Washington, D.C. There, viewers share an intimate series of moments with several of BenĢƵ patrons as they reflect on their experiences of restricted movement and race relations in the U.S.

Confronting the way race is discussed, “Traveling While Black” highlights the need to not only remember the past but to learn from it, and to facilitate a dialogue about the challenges minority travelers still face today.

“Traveling While Black” is a traveling virtual reality exhibition for participants to experience a deeper understanding of what segregation was like historically. The installation gathers multi-generational experiences and contemporary stories, highlighting the need to remember this past, build critical empathy, and facilitate a dialogue about the challenges minority travelers still face today.

Experiences run every 45 minutes through Sept. 24, and no pre-registration is required. The installation is recommended for those ages 12 and up.

820 Liberty Gallery is open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
