Take a stand to end sexual violence

3 min read

As unfortunate as the recent cases of high-profile sexual abuse are, we need to remember that similar tragedies are happening every day in our community.

As a provider of services for victims of sexual assault in Greene and Washington counties, each year the SPHS CARE Center STTARS program sees hundreds of victims of sexual assault who often suffer in silence. Sadly, most don’t seek immediate help or support until years, even decades after the abuse occurred.

According to the US Department of Justice, one in four girls and one in six boys will experience sexual violence before their 18th birthday.

Perpetrators most often are those we know and trust, which makes their actions even more horrific. On an individual level, we have a responsibility to intervene when we suspect sexual abuse or assault. On a community level, we have a responsibility to offer survivors a respectful, safe way to report abuse. How we act and our attitude towards victims can prevent others from being harmed.

I urge your readers to use this opportunity to help us end sexual violence in our community.

n Report every instance of abuse against children. Anyone can report by calling Childline at 1-800-932-0313.

n Talk to your children to prevent sexual abuse.

n Ask your schools and youth-serving organizations what policies and practices they have in place to prevent child sexual abuse.

n Invite the SPHS CARE Center STTARS program educators to your schools, youth groups, PTAs, or staff trainings.

n Become involved with the STTARS Program in our community awareness events and campaigns to end sexual violence.

The STTARS Program offers free, confidential counseling, advocacy and education to victims of sexual assault. For individuals with broader needs, the SPHS CARE Center has a continuum of services and support.

We have been providing this service in the community for over 30 years. Even though funding for these services has not increased in over a decade, we have not reduced our services or commitment and will continue our mission.

We welcome support in the form of volunteer time and donations. For information, contact 724-627-6108 in Greene County and 724-229-5007 in Washington County.

Remember that the STTARS 24-hour hotline (1-888-480-7283) is a resource if you have questions or need to talk.

Together, we can take a stand to end sexual violence.
