Excellent!
The Greene County Messenger’s guest commentary in the September 13-19 issue titled “Is New York Times’ story right or wrong about Greene County?” by Jessica Vozel is a doozy thought provoker.
Vozel gallantly defends Greene Countians against the New York Times’ unflattering description of our character. Yet, in conclusion, she pleads “Please, let’s not prove Mr. Wines’ portrayal right – that we are backwards and unable to think for ourselves.” I go along with that, but only to a point.
My experience as a native Greene Countian dictates that here smart, tough, savvy and surprise are reserved for the promotion of self and special interests leaving out “promote the general welfare” as prescribed in the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America. Incidentally, it is the same Constitution that contains Amendment II.
Vozel can drive home her point only if she is able to come up with no less than two examples for each of four issues identified as smart, tough, savvy and surprise. By driving the point home, I mean that our chronically disgraceful social and economic levels will soar from the lowest four percent in the commonwealth to the highest four percent.
