Reader comments on ‘Eye On Greene’

2 min read

The “Eye On Greene” segment in the Greene County Messenger is a favorite read for me. The probing questions asked of interviewees elicit interesting and revealing responses.

The segment may become even more interesting for subscribers and readers should coverage be expanded to include unique interests throughout the county. For instance, the Feb. 14-20 segment asked “What landmark, building, event or person from Greene County’s history would you like to read about?” All four interviewees were identified as residents from Waynesburg. Such is the case with all previous segments. It is therefore understandable that the responses are biased toward issues within the confines of Waynesburg.

Had the question been posed to me, a county native non-resident of Waynesburg, I would have identified Dreamer Park located in a remote part of Richhill Township. I would have included the Dreamer family who developed the site, which I find truly amazing, and donated it to the county.

An untutored eye may easily but wrongly view Waynesburg as being the essence of Greene County history. Perhaps that misconception will be dispelled if “Eye On Greene” coverage is expanded to embrace the entire county, particularly locations such as Alicia, Cumberland Village, Moffit, Nemacolin, Penn Pitt, etc.

In reference to the most recent “Eye On Greene,” a gambling parlor has operated profitably for several months in the borough of Carmichaels. For many years before that, profit-making PA lottery machines have permeated “lil’ ol’ Greene Cowney (sic).”
