Eagle helps Rohanna finish with 73

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Robert Rohanna scored an eagle on his 15th hole to finish with a 2-over 73 Thursday in the opening round of the 85th Abierto OSDE del Centro presentado por FiberCorp at Cordoba Golf Club in Cordoba, Argentina.

The Waynesburg Central graduate is sitting along the projected cut, but isn’t that far from the first-round leaders at 3-under.

Rohanna had three bogeys on his first nine holes, the back nine, to go out in 3-over 39.

He made the turn with a bogey-birdie-bogey start and closed with five pars and the eagle.

“I smoked a drive on No. 6, had 70 yards and pitched a sand wedge lower to the back pin and it landed like 8 feet short bounced, one time and rolled in like a putt!,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger. “It was pretty cool. I would like to do that more often!”

Rohanna wasn’t that disappointed with his play.

“Surprisingly, I actually played pretty good today. It’s just a hard course. You can’t miss any fairways and expect to make anything happen. I drove it great all day. I missed just a few fairways, but had a few tough putts I didn’t make to save the momentum. And, I didn’t take advantage of my opportunities on the par 5s! That’s what hurt,” said Rohanna.

He continued, adding, “I am really pleased how I played today, even though the score doesn’t show it. The greens are super soft and the course is soaked. Back pins are unbelievably hard to get to, if you land one pin high it spins back to the front because they are so sloped and if you land just a little long and it hits the fringe it bounces forward and you have nothing.

“But, I’m only five strokes back of the leaders.”
