Trojans have pretty good day against Frazier, J-M
COAL CENTER — The Trojans had a battle with Jefferson-Morgan, but California carried the field events on a sunny Thursday afternoon for a Section 6-AA sweep over the Rockets and Frazier.
California defeated Jefferson-Morgan, 80-61, and the Commodores, 95-39, while the Rockets salvaged a split by beating Frazier, 101-31.
The Trojans won the 3,200 and 1,600 relays against the Rockets, and had first-place finishes from Canyon Renner (400, 1:00), Dustin Mock (100, 12.2), Clayton Oveson (800, 2:16), Tim Sheehan (shot put, 38-5), Jordan Rossell (discus, 107-6), and Kass Taylor (high jump, 5-8; triple jump, 40-0; long jump, 17-10).
Charles Roberts was unable to pass the Rockets’ Aaron Mylan in the 1,600 and 3,200, but the California freshman picked up key second-place points with a couple good runs.
“I had a PR (personal best) in the 1,600, 4:57. My previous best was 5 flat (5 minutes),” said Roberts. “The pace in the first mile, 5:15, was a little too fast. I finished in 11:16. I paced off Aaron (Mylan) and was good for the first half.”
But, it was the time in the 1,600 that had Roberts pumped.
“I wanted to get my mile under 5 minutes since eighth grade,” explained Roberts. “I know this might be crazy, but by the time I’m a senior I want to be under four minutes.
“I’m hoping to go to states this year. I want to be running 4:54 by sectionals.”
Dustin Schimansky (110 high hurdles, 18.6), Mylan (1,600, 4:52; 3,200, 10:38), 400 relay (47.5), Chase Kovalcheck (300 intermediate hurdles, 48.8), Nick Teagarden (200, 25.5), and Nathan Cumor (javelin, 124-8) finished first for the Rockets against California.
Mylan was pressured by Roberts in both races, but managed to keep his pace. He finished the 1,600 in a personal-best time of 4:52 and the 3,200 in 10:38, his best time of the season to date..
“I ran the 1,600 exactly how I wanted. I wanted to go out fast and hold it, and then go fast in the last lap,” said Mylan. “It was a little rough in the first mile of the 3,200. I was fast and went out in 5:15. (Roberts) kept surging on me. I had to stay focused and try to drop him.”
Mylan has his goals set for later in the season.
“I want to be sub-10 by the qualifiers. If I can do both the 1,600 and 3,200, I’ll do it,” said Mylan.
The Commodores’ Lucas Klorczyk had a good day in the throws, finishing first overall in the javelin (152-1) and second in the discus (103-6).
“I had one of my worst throws (39-9) in the shot put,” the senior said of his third event.
Klorczyk, as with the other athletes, knows where he wants his throws to be next month.
“I want 44 feet in the shot put, 128 in the discus, and 170 in the javelin,” said Klorczyk. “My goal is to make the WPIAL finals. I was one place off in the javelin (from advancing out of the regionals).”
Frazier has had some pretty good javelin throwers in recent years and Klorczyk knows that.
“I have to step up and keep up the tradition,” said Klorczyk.
FrazierĢƵ Joe Horvath won the shot put with a throw of 43-4 and Shawn Metz won the 200 against the Trojans.
