CARMICHAELS 鈥� Seems out of place to say a match or a game a week into the schedule was key to the outcome of a season, but that was the feeling when Waynesburg Central traveled to Carmichaels Golf Club to play Carmichaels in Section 8-AA action.
Led by Liam Shea, Carmichaels remained undefeated in the section with a 220-231 victory Monday afternoon against the visiting Raiders.
Carmichaels (3-1) improves to 3-0 in the section. Waynesburg Central (3-2) evens out in the section at 2-2.
With only 12 section matches, every victory, especially early in the season, is a key victory.
鈥淲e had a huge one at California,鈥� Shea said of last Friday蘑菇视频 218-220 road win over the Trojans. The loss was California蘑菇视频 first.
Shea continued, adding, 鈥淥ur season is decided in the first week or two of matches.鈥�
Shea had a rough start when his approach shot on No. 2 went over the green, bounced high off the cart and landed out of bounds. That led to the first of his two double bogeys.
His second double bogey came on No. 8.
But, he evened out those bad holes with birdies on Nos. 4, 6, 7 and 9 for a round of even-par 37.
鈥淚 played really well. I hit the ball as well as I have all year,鈥� said Shea. 鈥淚 had that double (bogey) early in the round. I hit it bad. I was kinda shaky.
鈥淚 hit a solid iron on the green on No. 3 (a par-3) and made par. Then, I made a solid putt on No. 4 for birdie. That蘑菇视频 when I came back.鈥�
Shea said playing at Carmichaels the first time around was a good thing for the Mikes.
鈥淏eing on our home course, we can play it in our sleep. I just wanted to play and get a score,鈥� said Shea.
Taggart Shea, a freshman, shot a 45 as the first grouping shot 82 for the Mikes. The Raiders鈥� Aaron Yorio (39) and Trey Rohanna (41) countered with 80 for an early two-stroke lead.
鈥淚 try to do my own thing,鈥� Yorio said of his match approach. 鈥淚 wanted to come out and putt pretty well. The big thing for me was just keep it together.
鈥淚 was happy with what I shot.鈥�
The Mikes gained the lead after the second group finished. Chris McAfee (47) and Ethan Greene (48) combined for 95, while Brandon Turcheck (54) and Kyle Shriver (49) shot 103.
The Mikes鈥� No. 5 player Matt Barrish clinched the victory when he came in with 43. Delany Lohr蘑菇视频 54 wasn鈥檛 used.
McCottie Dengen, playing at No. 6 for the Raiders, closed out the scoring with a 48. Richard Bortz蘑菇视频 59 wasn鈥檛 used.
Waynesburg, with no seniors in the lineup, has another early key match Wednesday when the Raiders host California, who played a non-section match Monday against Fort Cherry. Carmichaels travels to Greene County Country Club to face Jefferson-Morgan.
