Rohanna misses the cut in Meijer LPGA Classic

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 3 min read

Rachel Rohanna played her final 27 holes in 1-under-par, but her first nine holes in 4-over to miss the cut Friday at the Meijer LPGA Classic For Simply Give.

The Waynesburg Central graduate played the second round on Blythefield Country Club in even-par 71 after opening with a 3-over 74.

The cut was at 1-under with Lexi Thompson leading at the halfway point at 10-under 132.

Rohanna played the front nine (her final nine holes) in 1-under in Thursday’s first round.

She moved to 1-over for the tournament after back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4, but was unable to close out the front nine with a bogey-bogey finish to go out in even-par 36.

Rohanna birdied No. 12, but finished the back nine with another bogey to come back with an even-par 35.

Rohanna had some issues off the tee, hitting just 7-of-13 fairways in the second round and 11-of-26 for the tournament. She needed 30 putts in the second round (27 in the first) and hit 12-of-18 greens in regulation in the second round for a two-day total of 22-of-36.

“I’m still trying to straighten out my driver,” said Rohanna. “I need to work on my driver and chipping, but the rough was very difficult so I need to give myself a little break.”

Rohanna is heading back to Greene County for the weekend and plans to get some work in at Nemacolin Woodlands.

“I need to focus on my driver,” said Rohanna.

As with most golfers, Rohanna felt she left some shots on the course.

“I feel like (I should’ve shot) at max even yesterday (in the first round), and 3- or 4-under today,” explained Rohanna. “As many putts as I made, I missed a couple.

“I wanted to post an under-par round (in the second round), but had bogey on the last hole.”

Rohanna doesn’t believe she needs a complete overhaul, just a tweak or two to buoy her confidence on the tee.

“I’m on the right track. I know what I need to work,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna will fly out to Arkansas after a brief stopover in western Pennsylvania for the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G in Rogers, Arkansas.

The three-day tournament begins Friday, but Rohanna will open the week Monday by playing in the pro-am. She hasn’t played Pinnacle Country Club before.

“I hope the layout has trees. I play better with more trees,” Rohanna said with a laugh.

Her younger sister Emily will get a well-deserved rest after hauling around her over-sized bag in Michigan.

“I’ll have a new caddie. I’m pretty excited about that. We worked together in Texas last year,” said Rohanna, adding with a chuckle, “Emily did pretty well with my bag this week.”
