Rohanna slips in second round, misses cut

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna left Desert Ridge’s Wildfire Golf Club Friday disappointed and frustrated after she shot 75 in the second round and missed the cut at the JTBC Founders Cup in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Waynesburg Central graduate had a two-round total of 1-over 145, missing the cut at 3-under by four strokes.

Sei Young Kim leads after the second round at 15-under 129.

“What a wasted day of decent ball striking,” lamented Rohanna. “(Thursday), I should’ve been no worse than 6-under and today, 2-under.

“It was frustrating all around. I wasn’t able to capitalize on anything this week.”

Rohanna closed her first round with a bogey “in the pitch dark” to drop a stroke to 2-under.

“(The first round) was frustrating. The groups ahead were playing so slowly. It cost me one shot there. We were rushing to get the hole in so we wouldn’t have to come back at 7 the next morning to finish up,” said Rohanna.

According to Rohanna, one of the main reasons for her frustration was her play on the par-5s, usually scorable considering her play off the tee.

“I played the par-5s really poorly. I had three bogeys. Then, I had two double bogeys (on par-4s) That’s an easy 10 shots, 4- to 9-under par,” explained Rohanna.

“But, that’s just golf.”

One of the par-5 bogeys came on her second hole, No. 11.

“I had a 3-putt. I had extremely long birdie putt, 90 feet,” said Rohanna. “Then, I had a 3 or 4-footer (for par). I misread the putt. It stayed dead straight and didn’t break.

“On No. 8 (her 17th hole), I yanked a 5-wood left into the desert. I had the most trouble with my 5-wood this week. It was hazard and I dropped. The wind took my shot (to the green) and hooked into the water. The only little pond on the course. I made a 15-footer for double (bogey).”

Rohanna hit just 15-of-28 fairways in the two rounds and 25-of-36 greens. She needed 30 putts the first day and 27 more in the second round.

“This week I hit six poor shots and that cost me 10 strokes. It’s extremely frurstrating. I couldn’t get things together,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna looks to take the positives of the tournament, her fourth as a new member of the LPGA, to the next event, the Kia Classic in Carlsbad, Calif., on March 24-27.
