Rohanna fights back to 1-over round

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 1 min read

Back-to-back birdies late in the round pulled Rachel Rohanna back to 1-over 73 in the opening round Thursday afternoon of the Kia Classic in Carlsbad, Calif.

Rohanna is tied in 56th place with 25 other players and is sitting right at the cut entering today’s second round at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa. The low 70 scores and ties advance to Saturday’s third round.

The Waynesburg Central graduate had a strong start with a birdie on No. 1, but gave the stroke back with a bogey on No. 6 and lost two strokes to the course with a double bogey on the next hole.

Rohanna played the front in 2-over 38.

She made the turn with a birdie, but back-to-back bogeys pushed her to 3-over in the first round.

Rohanna turned things around, however, with birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 to play the back nine in 1-under 35.

She hit 10-of-14 fairways and 12-of-18 greens in regulation. Rohanna needed 31 putts to complete her round.
