Lady Raiders strengthen playoff position

The Waynesburg Central softball team strengthened its position for a Section 2-AA playoff berth Thursday afternoon with a 12-2 victory in five innings over visiting Washington.

The Lady Raiders improve to 9-3 in the section and 9-9 overall. The Prexies slip to 0-11 in the section and 0-12 overall.

Waynesburg hosts McGuffey on Monday and travels to Carmichaels on Tuesday for its remaining section games.

Waynesburg was leading 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning when it broke the game open with seven runs.

Emma Ricciuti, Sydney Hare and Mattie Church all doubled in the inning, and Tara Staley blasted a two-run home run.

Staley finished with four RBI.

Ricciuti allowed doubles to Taylor Bainer and Alexis Strawn, striking out five and walking two.

Hawley Ellis gave up five hits in the loss, but her defense let her down with six errors. She struck out one and walked five.
