Rohanna climbs up the leaderboard

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna closed her first round Thursday with three wind-aided bogeys, but rebounded nicely in Friday’s second round of the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic with a 3-under 69 to make the cut with a 1-under 143.

“I hit the ball well,” said Rohanna. “I missed a couple putts or my score would’ve been lower. I’m right where I want to be.”

The Waynesburg Central graduate is tied for 38th place and sits eight strokes behind leader So Yeon Ryu after 36 holes.

The wind that plagued Rohanna in the first round didn’t go away, it just changed direction.

“I played in the wind for all 18 holes,” said Rohanna. “The win came from a different direction today.”

Rohanna, and her entire threesome, for that matter, played Nos. 7-8-9 in 3-over-par in the first round.

“I played 7-8-9 really well. I missed a 7-footer for birdie on 7 and a 4-footer for birdie on 8. I could’ve gone birdie-birdie-birdie,” said Rohanna. “They played really different with a crosswind.”

She had a bogey, birdie and seven pars on the front to go out in even-par 36.

The finishing holes in the first round, added to a slow start in the second round, made for a moody group of golfers.

“It was frustrating. You could tell the whole group was frustrated. The mood of the group, you could tell we finished with bogeys,” explained Rohanna. “We started lighting it up on the back and started having a good time.”

Rohanna had three birdies and six pars on the back to finish in 3-under 33.

She needed 30 putts in the second round, compared to 32 in the first. Rohanna hit 8-of-14 fairways and 15-of-18 greens in regulation.

Rohanna looks for the way she played Friday to carry over to the weekend.

“I’m happy shooting in the 60s and playing on the weekend,” said Rohanna. “I think I hit my wedges worse today, but somehow they all stayed on the green. I guess luck was on my side today.

“Now I’m at the point where I’m playing well enough to keep making that climb (up the leaderboard).”
