Rachel Rohanna shoots 73 in final round

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna had a difficult time off the tee Sunday and as a consequence wasn’t able to find any consistency in the final round of the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic, finishing with a 1-over 73 for a four-day total of 1-under 287.

The Waynesburg Central graduate finished tied for 45th place for earnings of $4,777.

Ariya Jutanugarn finished with a 14-under 274 for the first-place prize of $195,000.

“It was not a good driving day today,” said Rohanna. “I hit a couple of poor tee shots because of me.”

Rohanna also said she had a couple poor tee shots because of the wind.

She had five bogeys and four birdies. Three birdies were quickly followed by bogeys and one bogey was countered by a birdie.

Two of the bogeys stood out for Rohanna.

“I had two sixes on the scorecard. I bogeyed the two par-5s. I had too many shots from the high grass,” explained Rohanna. “Both par-5s were easy birdie holes. I gave four strokes to the field.

“My par-3s were not good this week. I played the par-3s in 5-over.”

Despite the frustration on the aforementioned holes, Rohanna added, “I hit the ball well enough to get into contention.

“It feels annoying. I know I’m really close.”

Rohanna hit only half the fairways (7-of-14) and 12-of-18 greens in regulation. She needed 31 putts, her average per round in the four-day tournament.

The tour takes the week off, returning for the Kingsmill Championship Presented by JTBC on May 19-22 in Williamsburg, Va.

Rohanna plays in a U.S. Open qualifier at Butler Country Club on Monday, May 16, before the Kingsmill Championship.

“They didn’t make it easy for the LPGA or Symetra girls,” Rohanna said of timing of the USGA championship qualifier.

She remains confident in her game and believes it’s just a matter of time before it all comes together.

“I’m out here (on the LPGA Tour). You need one good week and you’re set for the next year, just one four-day tournament,” said Rohanna. “My driving this week was awesome. We had tough greens this week.”

Rohanna is looking forward to the swing north.

“The northern courses are bent grass. I grew up on it. It’ll be great for me,” said Rohanna.
