Rohanna opens with 70 in Dominican Republic Open

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Robert Rohanna was on the right side of suspended play this time, completing his opening round of 2-under 70 on the first day Wednesday of the Casa de Campo Dominican Republic Open before play was halted because of darkness.

The Waynesburg Central graduate is tied for 16th place entering today’s second round. American Ken Looper holds the early lead at 6-under 66.

According to Rohanna, Teeth of the Dog Casa de Campo is an appropriate name for the home course of the Dominican Republic Open.

“I had a solid round today. This course is pretty tough and can bite you pretty hard if you aren’t hitting it well,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger. “I scrambled well today. It wasn’t a great ball striking day, but I chipped and putted solid, so the short game bailed me out!

“It’s a really hard golf course, a Pete Dye design at its best.”

Rohanna opened with a birdie on No. 10, adding another birdie, a bogey and six pars to go out in 1-under 35. He carded the same scores on his back nine.

Weather delays and suspensions led Rohanna to have four early days last week in Honduras. He has a morning tee time in today’s second round, but not at the crack of dawn like last week.

“Well, I kind of do (have an early tee time), 8:20,” said Rohanna with a laugh. “But, at least it’s not 6 a.m. again.”

Rohanna felt he will be able to build on his first round.

“I’m hoping I can find something to click on the range and continue to chip and putt well, that would be ideal,” said Rohanna. “But, I’m just going to try to have some fun, hit the ball, go find it and hit it again, hopefully.”
