Rohanna birdie-free in final round, finishes T-19

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Robert Rohanna had 18 birdies and an eagle over the first three rounds of the 58th Abierto Mexicano de Golf, but, unfortunately, didn’t card any in Sunday’s final round.

The Waynesburg Central graduate shot 3-over 74 on Club Campestre Aguascaliente in the final round for a four-day total of 9-over 275. Rohanna opened the day tied for fourth place and two strokes from the top of the leaderboard, but slid down into a tie for 19th in the final standings.

“Super frustrating way to end the week, I have to be honest,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger. “I felt pretty good today. It just didn’t work out for me.”

Rohanna had bogeys on Nos. 1, 3 and 17, and 15 pars.

“Apparently,” Rohanna responded when asked if he used up all his birdies. “I hit 15 greens today. I had two unplayable lies. One hole there is a tree in the middle of the fairway. I hit it off the tee and the ball dropped about two inches from it, right behind it.

“The other hole I drove it over the green. It went down and rolled against the back edge of the bunker. I had to it backwards and made a good bogey.”

Rohanna said he just couldn’t get putts into the cup that fell with consistency the previous three rounds.

“I putted really good today. I can’t say that I didn’t putt good. I putted really well, just COULD NOT get one to drop,” Rohanna said with emphasis. “I burned so many edges, the putts looked like they were going in until the last five inches and the bounces didn’t go my way.”

Sebastian Vasquez parred No. 18, the first playoff hole, to defeat Augusto Nunez, who carded a bogey-5. The golfers finished at 16-under 268.

The PGA Tour Latinoamerica remains in Mexico this week the Mazatlan Open before taking its “winter break” through June, July and August.

“I don’t know what I’m doing yet for the summer, but I will be home to play a few events,” Rohanna said of his summer plans.
