Rohanna has solid first round in Ontario
Rachel Rohanna rallied over her final nine holes Thursday to finish the opening round of the Manulife LPGA Classic with an even-par 72.
Rohanna is tied in 68th place, right at the cut line for the low 70 scores and ties.
The Waynesburg Central graduate opened on No. 10 and promptly started bogey-bogey. Rohanna birdied the next hole, but closed with a bogey on No. 18 to go out in 2-over 38.
Rohanna made the turn and moved to 3-over with a bogey-5 on No. 2, but then she made a move with three consecutive birdies to get to even for the round.Â
She closed her back nine of Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, with a bogey and birdie for a 2-under 34.
This is the second week in Canada for the LPGA Tour, and the first week didn’t go so great for Rohanna when she missed the cut at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open in Calgary, Alberta, with an 11-over 155. She played the front nine over the two rounds in 2-under 70, but had issues on the back nine.
“I felt like I played great. I had eight birdies in 36 holes,” explained Rohanna. “I felt good coming into this week.”
Rohanna was happy with the way she played in the opening round.
“I played really well. I put myself in position to move up the scoreboard (in the second round),” said Rohanna.Â
Rohanna said of her five bogeys, “On No. 18 (her ninth hole), I missed the yardage. I had a 3-putt on one.”
Rohanna felt she putted okay with 29 putts, but it was also the stroke that held her back.
“I putted alright. Today, overall, putting kept me from really going low. I was worried about my pace more than my line,” said Rohanna. “I hit the ball great. I actually hit my drives pretty good. I hit my driver really well.”
Rohanna hit 8-of-14 fairways and said off the fairway on Whistle Bear Golf Club is not where a ball wants to be off the tee.
“It’s open, links-style. There aren’t many trees,” said Rohanna. “It’s high rough. You don’t want to miss the fairway.”
Rohanna is confident heading into today’s second round.
“If I play the way I played today, tomorrow, I should be good. I think a 68, 67 is reachable if I get a couple putts to fall,” said Rohanna.
