Rohanna misses cut after tough 4-hole stretch

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 3 min read

Rachel Rohanna had a difficult time at the turn Friday in the second round of the Manulife LPGA Classic, leading her to miss the cut at the Manulife LPGA Classic in Cambridge, Ontario.

The Waynesburg Central graduate shot 6-over 78 in the second round to finish with a two-round score of 6-over 150.

American Marina Alex leads at the midpoint with a 10-under 134. The cut for the low 70 scores and ties was at 1-under 143.

Rohanna’s bad stretch started with a bogey-5 on No. 7. That blossomed into three straight double bogeys to push her score to 6-over for the round.

“The hole before this (the string of double bogeys) all started, I bogeyed (No. 7) from 115 yards. I just misclubbed due to the wind,” explained Rohanna. “But, then I wasn’t really comfortable with my club selection on No. 8, a par-3, and I tried knocking down a 7-iron and just double-crossed it into the water on the left.

“Then, on No. 9, I cut off way too much of the corner and again went into the water. And, on No. 10, I just had a really bad lie about one yard off the fairway and had to punch out. I just hit a poor third shot and fourth shot leaving me with a 2-putt from seven feet.

“It was a very, very frustrating stretch of holes. I also had three 3-putts, I believe.”

Take away that four-hole stretch and Rohanna was under par. She opened with a bogey on No. 1, but followed with back-to-back birdies. Rohanna had a birdie and bogey on the back. She played the front in 4-over 40 and the back in 2-over 38.

“So, really, I played awesome on 12 holes,” Rohanna said with a chuckle.

Rohanna hit 8-of-14 fairways and 12-of-18 greens in regulation, and needed 34 putts to close out her round.

Rohanna was disappointed with her finish, but not dismayed in her LPGA regular season finale.

“Yes, overall I started to finally feel like Rachel again (striking the ball), but struggled with pace on the greens. I knew other girls were struggling too, but I just didn’t make all of the come back putts like I usually do,” said Rohanna. “My chipping wasn’t spectacular, but good enough to have gotten me a top-20 finish. I would say it was just maybe five swings this week that cost me about 8-9 shots, which would have put me right in there. It truly is such a fine line between 6-over and 6-under.”

Rohanna might try to play in a Symetra Tour event or two before preparing for another Q School.

“I’ll start at final stage,” said Rohanna.
