Rohanna opens with 70 in Nicaragua
Robert Rohanna admitted he didn’t have his best putting performance Thursday afternoon, but managed to make enough putts to shoot 1-under 70 in the opening round of the Flor de Cana Open presented by The Mortgage Store.
Gucalito de La Isla in Gucalito de La Isla, Nicaragua, was hit by rain before first round, leading to a one-hour delay for course maintenance. Those same rains led to play being suspended soon after Rohanna completed his round.
Rohanna is tied for 48th, right at the cut line of the low 55 scores and ties with over half the field still on the course.
The Waynesburg Central graduate opened the front nine with five pars before going birdie-birdie-bogey. He closed with a par to go out in 1-under 35.
Rohanna went to even with a bogey on No. 11, but responded with a birdie-2 on No. 12. He bogeyed No. 14, but move back under par with a birdie-4 on No. 16. Rohanna played the back in even-par 35.
“Tee to green, it was great,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger. “The greens are really hard to putt out here. I hit lots of good shots and good putts, but it’s hard to make putts. They are so bouncy, but they aren’t that hilly.
“Some putts are slow. Some putts are quick. It’s hard to judge out there. It’s a guessing game every time.”
Rohanna said half of his stroke total was on the green.
“I had 35 putts, unfortunately, but hit it good,” said Rohanna. “I played solid, though. I’m happy about it, just would like to make a few more putts, but, oh well.
“People are obviously making putts, and maybe hitting it better than me, too, but I’m guessing it’s just putting.”
