CMU handles Yellow Jackets, 35-23

Waynesburg kept pace with Carnegie Mellon through three quarters last Saturday, but the Tartans pulled away in the fourth for a 35-23 win.

Carnegie Mellon (1-1) scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, while the Yellow Jackets’ Jake Dougherty had touchdown passes of 20 and 16 yards.

Whitney White’s 3-yard run late in the second quarter tied the game at 7-all. The Yellow Jackets’ Garrett Guthrie’s 33-yard field goal at 2:09 of the third quarter made the score 14-10 in favor of Carnegie Mellon.

Dougherty was 22-of-39 for 259 yards and no interceptions.

The Yellow Jackets’ Kevin Barnes caught seven passes for 113 yards and a fourth-quarter TD.

Mitch Kendra also caught seven passes, finishing with 94 yards. Tim Cooper had four receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Chad Walker led Waynesburg (0-3) with 41 yards rushing on nine carries. White had seven rushes for 33 yards.
