Yellow Jackets sweep baseball, softball twin bills (copy)

Baseball

Waynesburg University swept a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) baseball doubleheader over Geneva College on Friday at Geneva.

The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 9-2, before earning a 7-3 victory in Game 2 to improve to 5-7 in conference play and 11-16 overall.

Waynesburg allowed the Golden Tornadoes (2-12, 8-20) to score their only two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2 before Yellow Jackets starting pitcher Derek Whalen (4-2) shut down the home team the remaining six innings. Whalen allowed two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. He had one strikeout and one walk.

Waynesburg scored a run in the second, one in the fifth and four in the seventh.

The visitor’s Tyler Reis was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. Teammate Nathan Mori was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the fourth for a 5-2 advantage and held off a late rally by Geneva College for the win in Game 2.

Waynesburg’s Mason Miller (1-2) won his first game on the mound after allowing two earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. He had seven strikeouts and walked two.

Teammate Jacob Meyer relieved Miller and pitched the final two innings. Meyer allowed one earned run on three hits with one strikeout and no walks.

Connellsville grad John Przybylinski started at catcher for the Yellow Jackets and was scored a run for the visitors in the three-run fourth.

Josh Hausler, Justin Buberi and Jonathon Kletzli had two hits for Waynesburg. Kletzi knocked in a team-high three runs with one double. Hausler doubled and had two stolen bases.

Softball

Waynesburg University 1, Bethany College 0; Waynesburg University 10, Bethany College 9 — The Yellow Jackets edged the Bison twice, with Game 1 being a pitcher’s duel, and Game 2 a high-scoring contest.

Waynesburg University (5-6, 11-16-1) scored Game 1’s lone run when Courtney Syfert scored on Alex Lawrence’s sacrifice fly to center field.

Syfert, Rachel Skon and Albert Gallatin grad Ashley Dubovich had the three base hits for the Yellow Jackets.

Brownsville grad Cheyenne Wasko had a sacrifice at-bat for Waynesburg University.

Bethany (6-4, 12-16) had two hits in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) game.

Yellow Jackets starting pitcher Courtney Messenger improved to 9-7 with the victory in the circle. She allowed no runs on two hits in seven innings of work with one strikeout and one walk.

The Bison jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second and extended their lead to 9-0 with a five-run third before Waynesburg started to chip away.

The Jackets scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and exploded for six in the sixth inning to edge their conference rival.

Cat Allstatt (2-6) came on in relief to pick up the pitching victory for Waynesburg. She didn’t allow a run on three hits in four innings of work with one strikeout and one walk.

Second baseman Dubovich was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Wasko had an RBI sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning.

Teammate Lyndi Gareis was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored. The Jackets’ Alex Lawrence doubled.

Madison Pride had two base hits for the visitors.
