Lady Falcons clinch second with 75-66 win

The Section 6-AA finale Thursday afternoon was decided by not only first-place finishes, but also the seconds and thirds as the Brownsville girls slipped by Waynesburg Central, 75-66, at Charleroi.

The Lady Falcons finished second with a record of 8-1 to advance to the Class AA team playoffs.

“We pieced together some points. We picked up some great third places today,” said Brownsville coach Jim Barak. “Our kids fought through the meet. I’m very proud.

“We were down 45-42 after the (running events). It came down to the field. We swept the javelin.”

Alie Seto totaled 20 points in the field by winning the discus (91-11), high jump (4-8), triple jump (31-2¼), and long jump (14-5).

Macy Bosworth led the Brownsville sweep of the javelin by finishing first with a throw of 96-4.

The Lady Falcons’ quartet of Rae’Ven Walker, Sara Vance, Jessica Vance and Gionna Quarzo opened the meet by winning the 3,200 relay in 10:40.59

Quarzo set the school record in the 3,200, winning in 11:28.05. She also won the 1,600 in 5:32.85.

Jessica Vance finished first in the 800 (2:39.04).

Megan McElligot (100 high hurdles, 19.16), Juliana Fowler (100, 13.53; 200 28.15), Emma Mankey (400, 1:08.6), Makayla Russel (300 intermediate hurdles, 1:00.47), and Maddie Baker (shot put, 28-4) finished first for the Lady Raiders.

The Waynesburg boys had an easier time, defeating the Falcons, 98-43.

Daniel Layton (110 high hurdles, 16.20; 300 intermediate hurdles, 44.01), Blake Brewer (100, 11.75), Cade Rush (1,600, 5:17.30; 800, 2:18.79), Dylan Scritchfield (400, 55.78), Cameron McIe (200, 23.72; high jump, 5-4), Ben Bumgarner (3,200, 11:27), Josh Galbraith (shot put, 34-7), and Avery McConville (discus, 82-11) all finished first for the Raiders.

Waynesburg also won the 3,200 and 400 relays.

E.J. Victory won the javelin for the Falcons (4-5) with a throw of 124-2. Nicholas Seton finished first in the triple jump (37-9¼) and long jump (16-9). The Falcons’ Grant Lima, Dave Hromada, Gage Wiltrout and Zion Howard won the 1,600 relay in 4:13.17.
