Waynesburg softball drops doubleheader

The Waynesburg softball team had a rough time Monday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader in The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Yellow Jackets (1-3) lost the opener to Adrian in extra innings, 4-3, and then fell in the nightcap to Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, 9-1.

Waynesburg had a 1-0 lead against Adrian when Ashley Dubovich was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. 

Adrian took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fifth inning.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on Rachel Skon’s sacrifice fly and Alex Lawrence’s RBI double.

Adrian tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and then scored the game-winning run in the eighth during the international tiebreaker.

Messenger allowed seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings. Lawrence with 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Dubovich spotted the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the second game, but the Engineers (2-0) scored three runs in the top of the second for the lead. They added three more runs in the top of the third and the final three in the top of the fifth.

Cat Allstatt took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in three innings.
