Rohanna shoots 67 in opening round

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Rachel Rohanna had one bad hole in the opening round of the inaugural Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic Thursday afternoon, but more than covered the result to finish with a 5-under 67.

The Waynesburg Central graduate sits in a 17-way tie for fifth place at 67.

Sei Young Kim and Laura Gonzalez Escallon share the first-round lead at 7-under 65.

Rohanna opened on No. 10 and got off to a rousing start on the Thornberry Creek at Oneida course in Oneida, Wisconsin, with a birdie.

She had back-to-back birdies on her fifth and sixth holes, but had some issues with the par-3 17th, her eighth hole, with a double bogey.

“I just didn’t feel good with my club selection and then hit it in a bunker. I hit it to 18 feet, but just knocked it four feet by and missed the 4-footer,” explained Rohanna.

Rohanna went out in 1-under 35.

She righted the ship after making the turn with a pair of pars and a birdie on her 12th hole. Rohanna closed with three consecutive birdies and a par to play her back nine in 4-under 32.

Rohanna finished with seven birdies, one double bogey and 10 pars. She hit 8-of-14 fairways and 15-of-18 greens in regulation. She had 29 putts.

“I made a lot of really good shots, about four or five birdies within six feet,” said Rohanna, who was in one of the last groups off the tee. “The greens were a little rough and bumpy, but, hopefully, will be smoother tomorrow.”

Rohanna celebrated her fourth wedding anniversary Thursday with her husband Ethan Virgili in the gallery.

“Anytime I had a bad shot, I just looked over at Ethan and smiled,” Rohanna said with a laugh.

Rohanna tees off No. 1 this morning at 9:20 a.m. local time.
