WPIAL finals and PIAA playoffs
Three Greene County teams could have a chance to extend their seasons with trips to the PIAAs.
Carmichaels’ softball has already advanced to the state tournament after a 3-2 victory over Leechburg last Friday in the Class A third-place consolation contest at California University of Pa.Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Lilley Field.
The Lady Mikes (18-5) will play the District 9 champion in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Monday with a time and site to be determined.
The Jefferson-Morgan baseball team played in the Class A third-place consolation game against Union on Wednesday at Ross Memorial Park (Washington & Jefferson) and the West Greene softball squad played Monessen on Thursday in the Class A Final at Lilley Field.
Both games were past deadline, but both games’ stories and pictures are posted on our website.
The Lady Pioneers (21-1) are looking for their second straight Class A title, while the Rockets (12-6) will be searching for their first PIAA appearance since the mid-1980s.
If both West Greene and Jefferson-Morgan win, they will also start the PIAA playoffs on Monday.
It has been a busy spring for Greene County sports, and some news has gone through the cracks.
A couple of weeks ago Waynesburg University ended the search for their next football coach with the hiring of university alumni and offensive coordinator Chris Smithley.
After 12-year coach Rick Shepas suddenly retired in the winter, the university decided to hire Smithley as the interim coach for the 2017 season.
Smithley has been the offensive coordinator for the Yellow Jackets since June 2016. The Bolivar, Pa., native also served the Jackets as a secondary coach for a year and a defensive line coach for two years between 2009 and 2012.
Before returning to Waynesburg in 2016, Smithley was a member of W&JÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ coaching staff from 2012 to 2016. He served as secondary coach and special teams coordinator for three years and as a linebacker coach for a season.
The Yellow Jackets suffered their second straight sub-.500 season in 2016, going 2-8 overall and 2-6 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Waynesburg opens up the 2017 campaign at non-conference foe Muskingum University on Sept. 2.
In other news, the Jefferson-Morgan family lost a key figure with the passing of Donna Furnier.
Furnier was the superintendent for J-M since 2005 and has been in the district since 1999.
If you attended any sporting event for the Rockets over the last decade, you would see Furnier there supporting the students. Doesn’t matter if it was at Jefferson or at a playoff game around Pittsburgh, she was always in attendance with her Orange & Black.
The last couple of years she has been battling cancer, but you could never really tell because she was still so positive. She always said hello to me and asked me how I was doing.
Deepest sympathies goes out to her family and the J-M community. She will surely be missed at J-M.
