Shepas retires as Waynesburg’s football coach
Rick Shepas announced Monday he will be retiring as the Waynesburg University head football coach after 12 years at the position.
“I’ve been fortunate to be a caretaker of the program for the last 12 years,” Shepas said. “The main thing on my mind is continuity for the future.”
Shepas leaves as the winningest coach in the programĢƵ history with a career record of 69-55. The Yellow Jackets had their best run under Shepas from 2012-14 when they went 25-8 with the programĢƵ second 10-win season.
The Yellow Jackets shared the 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and played in the 2007 ECAC Southeast championship game.
“Waynesburg allowed me to fulfill a dream of coaching Division III football for the last 12 years and provided a great environment for me to continue to raise my family,” Shepas said. “I’m very grateful for all of that and everything that Waynesburg University has provided to me and my family.”
Among those who played for Shepas were defensive lineman Mike Czerwien (2004-07), who set the NCAA all divisions record with 53½ career sacks, Robert Heller (2007-08), who had a school-record 2,176 rushing yards on 385 carries as a freshman, and Adam Moses (2009-12), a three-time first-team All-PAC selection who also was a D3Football.com All-American.
The Waynesburg football program also received recognition for academics throughout Shepas’ tenure.
“None of these things were possible without the players who committed to play here and wanted to play here and the coaches who have been with me during my tenure at Waynesburg. I think everything has been great,” Shepas said. “I need to thank the faculty and staff who have played huge roles in the recruiting process, as well as the care and consideration of our players while they have been on campus.”
