Yellow Jackets lose one, tie in the other

The Waynesburg softball team lost the opener, 7-3, and played to a 4-4 tie in the nightcap against Carlow on Monday.

The Celtics (6-4-1) led 7-0 into the top of the seventh inning in the first game, but Keri Renzler drove in a run to get the Yellow Jackets on the board. Waynesburg (4-9-1) added another run on a double steal in the bottom of the seventh.

Four errors led to five unearned runs off Waynesburg starting pitcher Lyndi Gareis. Gareis allowed 10 hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Waynesburg used three consecutive hits with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. However, Carlow scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.

The game was called due to darkness after Waynesburg batted in the bottom of the inning.

Courtney Messenger went the distance, allowing one unearned run on seven hits. She struck out three and walked one.

The Yellow Jackets’ Alex Lawrence went 4-for-8 with two doubles and two RBI in the doubleheader. Cat Allstatt was 3-for-6. Messenger and Rachel Skon both had three hits in the two games.

Waynesburg hosts a doubleheader against Point Park on Wednesday.
