Rohanna rallies to make the cut, again
Rachel Rohanna was on the wrong side of the cutline last week when she finished with two birdies and an eagle to earn a berth into the final round.Â
The Waynesburg Central graduate did the same in Friday’s second round of the Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club with a 1-under 71 for a spot in Saturday’s final round.
Rohanna moved up the leaderboard and enters the final round with a two-day total of 2-over 146.
She opened the second round on the back nine and promptly started with a birdie on No. 10. Rohanna bogeyed No 14 to play her opening nine in even-par 36.
Rohanna bogeyed No. 2, her 11th hole, to slip to 4-over for the tournament.
But, as she did last week, Rohanna finished strong with two birdies in the final five holes, including the last hole of the second round to play her back nine in 1-under.
“I don’t know why I do this to myself,” laughed Rohanna. “I’ve been playing very good for the past two days.”
Although she made the cut, Rohanna wondered where she’d be situated had a few more putts would’ve dropped.
“I missed one very short putt in the first round. (She left) five shots, so far. This was the highest score I can possibly score,” said Rohanna. “I can’t get putts to fall. It’s a struggle out here. It was a swirling wind.”
“I have two bogeys and one double bogey becausse landed in awkward places if I don’t land on the green,” added Rohanna, who went back to the course to work on her chipping.
She’s not scoring on the holes she is usually the strongest.
“I’m not playing the par-5s too good,” said Rohanna.Â
Rohanna said she’s hitting the ball well off the tee, she’s just not getting the ball to fall on the green.
“I was hitting my driver great last week and am this week, too,” said Rohanna. “It’s coming down to putting. I’m putting well. They’re just not falling.
“I’m missing by a half-inch. There are subtle breaks I’m misreading. I’m hitting confident strokes, they’re just not going in.
“I don’t need to overread (the putts). Just hit it. Trust my first instinct is right and just go with it.”
Rohanna feels she can make a move in the final round.
“I’m giving myself a lot of opportunities. One of these (putts) is bound to fall. “I think I can go a few under (par) and climb up the leaderboard. Every dollar counts.”
