Rohanna shoots opening-round 71

Rachel Rohanna had trouble finding the fairway, but made some putts Thursday for an opening round 71 at the Self Regional Healthcare Foundation Classic in Greenwood, S.C.

The Waynesburg Central graduate is in a six-way tie for 13th at 1-under. Augusta James, Celine Boutier and Allie White are tied at 4-under after the first round of the four-round, $200,000 Symetra Tour tournament.

Rohanna hit just 8-of-14 fairways, but found was able to find the greens in regulation.

“I didn’t think I hit it very well, but ended up hitting 14 greens and putted well,” said Rohanna, who needed 29 putts to complete her round.

Rohanna opened on the back nine at The Links at Stoney Point with seven straight pars before carding her first birdie of the day. She parred her ninth hole to go out in 1-under 35.

She lost the stroke with a bogey on No. 1, her 10th hole, but recovered with a birdie on the next hole. Another birdie came on her 15th hole, but she bogeyed the next hole to finish 1-under for the round.

“(The course) has some tricky tee shots, and the greens are in rough shape, but over all, there are a lot of birdie holes to take advantage of,” said Rohanna.

Rohanna tees off No. 1 at 1:04 p.m. and understands what she needs to do to make the cut and play in the weekend rounds.

“I need to hit more fairways,” she said with a laugh. “I had too many lucky shots today. I hooked a couple shots that could’ve cost me a lot, but ended up working out.’
