Roaring Lions softball team makes first appearance in USCAA tournament (copy)
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus earned its first ever trip to the USCAA Softball Championships this season, but was eliminated on Monday at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, after suffering a pair of losses.
The Roaring Lions dropped a heart-breaking, eight-inning 1-0 loss to Judson (Alabama) in the first game. Penn State Fayette out-hit its opponent, 5-2, but Judson scored the gameĢƵ only run when freshman Amanda Rowley scored on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
Monica Joseph (Frazier) had three of the Roaring Lions’ five hits with the other two coming from Aubree Yates (Bentworth) and Lauren Adams (Mapletown).
Adams is one of three Greene County players on the roster along with Emily Lewis (Carmichaels) and Emily Blaker (Mapletown).
SUNY-Canton defeated Penn State Fayette in the second game, 8-0, as Jordan Podkladek tossed a one-hitter. Senior Miranda Nichols (Brownsville) had the Roaring Lions’ only hit, a single to right-center leading off the fourth inning.
That ended a highly successful season for Penn State Fayette as it went 18-20 overall but 13-7 in PSUAC play.
The Roaring Lions went 17-17 during the regular season then defeated Penn State New Kensington in the first round of the PSUAC tournament, 6-0, as Tiffany Markovitch (Brownsville) tossed a shutout and Yates had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, Nichols hit a three-run double to key a five-run second and Lewis had two hits.
Penn State Fayette fell to Penn State Brandywine in the semifinals, 9-2. Joseph and Yates each had three hits in the loss and Nichols had two, including a double. Yates and Nichols knocked in the two runs.
Despite the defeat, the Roaring Lions did enough to receive an invite into the USCAA tournament.
Joseph led the team in batting average at .381. Nichols (.359), Yates (.355) and Hannah Kline (Frazier, .333) each also hit over .300.
Other team leaders for the Roaring Lions were Yates in runs scored (28), stolen bases (9), triples (4) and home runs (1), Nichols in RBIs (26), Joseph and Yates in hits (43) and Markovitch in doubles (10).
Markovitch also led the team in wins (10), followed by Lauren Adams (Mapletown, 4).
The Roaring Lions are coached by John Miller with volunteer assistant coach Kevin Brown and student assistant coach Alyssa Strausser.
