Lady Falcons run to section crown

Led by Gionna Quarzo’s record-setting run, the Brownsville girls completed the Section 3-AA schedule undefeated Tuesday afternoon with a sweep of a triangular held at Waynesburg Central.

The Lady Falcons defeated Belle Vernon (21-36) and Waynesburg Central (15-46) to finish 10-0. Belle Vernon (8-2) earned a split with a 20-35 win against the Lady Raiders.

Quarzo finished in 20:17 to set the Waynesburg course record.

Teammate Sara Vance was second in 21:31, with Vance’s twin sister Jessica third in 22:05. 

Belle Vernon’s Grace Henderson was fourth in 22:59 and teammate Taylor Kovatch was fifth in 23:38.

Brownsville’s Hannah DeWitt (7, 23:55) and Ashton Reposky (9, 24:35), Belle Vernon’s Taylor Kovatch (6, 23:38) and Kaitlynn Melvin (10, 25:59), and Waynesburg Central’s Mara Negley (8, 24:17) rounded out the top-10 finishers.

The Belle Vernon boys (8-2) swept the meet, defeating Brownsville (22-34) and Waynesburg Central (22-34). Brownsville (7-3) earned a split by beating the Raiders, 22-34. Waynesburg finishes the season with a 6-4 record.

The Leopards’ Brett Seich easily won the boys race in 18:58. He was followed by teammates Josh Martin (20:38) and Jake Sepesky (20:42).

The Falcons’ Nick Seto was fourth in 20:52, followed by teammates Ray Brumley (21:22) and Ty Higginbotham (21:23). The Raiders’ Gabe McConville and teammate Kullen Thorne both finished in 21:24 for seventh and eighth places.

Belle Vernon’s Seth Yankosky (21:43) and Brownsville’s Noah Diggs (22:15) closed out the top-10 finishers.
