Rohanna opens with 1-over in Indy
Rachel Rohanna wasn’t able to score as she wanted on the par-5s Thursday in the first round of the Indy Women in Tech Championship presented by Guggenheim, and as a result she finished with a 1-over 73.
The Waynesburg Central graduate sits tied in 94th place with the anticipated cut at 1-under. Lexi Thompson holds the lead after the first round at 9-under 63.
“Yep, those darn par-5s, ha,” Rohanna said of her play on the four par-5s at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course, adding “But, lots of patience today.”
The Indy Women in Tech Championship is a new event on the LPGA Tour. The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course, a Pete Dye-designed course, weaves through the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Rohanna played the four par-5s in 3-over with a bogey, double bogey and two pars. Otherwise, she played the remaining 14 holes in 2-under.
“The par-5s need to be at least 2-under tomorrow,” said Rohanna. “I was working on my swing after the round, so hopefully it’s ready to go tomorrow. It is a tough course, and it’s windy, but I’m due for a low score.”
Rohanna had a bogey, double bogey and birdie to play the front nine in 2-over 38. She played the back in 1-under 35 with two birdies and a bogey.
“Eh, not great, but well enough to have gone a few under,” Rohanna said of her round. “I’m hitting a lot of balls to the right, which I would prefer compared to hitting it left, but some of them are going too far off line. I’m putting well though, so that always helps.”
Rohanna hit 9-of-14 fairways and 8-of-18 greens in regulation. She had 24 putts in the opening round.
She tees off at 12:41 p.m. (Central Time).
