Rohanna shoots 1-under in first round

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Robert Rohanna carded four birdies in the first round of the San Luis Championship in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Friday, to finish with a 1-under 71.

The Waynesburg Central graduate is tied for 30th place with the anticipated cut at 1-over.

Jose de Jesus Rodriguez, Austin Smotherman and Oscar Fraustro share the lead after the first round at 5-under 67 with a number of golfers still on the course after play was suspended due to darkness.

Rohanna had a rough start with back-to-back bogeys, but rebounded with three birdies to go out in 1-under 35. He had one bogey, a birdie and seven pars on the back to come back in even-par 36.

The region has received a lot of rain with the storms blowing through the Caribbean, but Rohanna said he was pleased with his round.

“I did,” Rohanna replied via Facebook Messenger when asked if he managed to stay dry. “Three bogeys isn’t too bad around this place! Four birdies is good, though.

“I played surprisingly well, so I’m happy with the day. I could have made a few more putts, but everyone can say that.”

Rohanna is looking to carry over his solid play into the second round.

“Yes, I’m hoping to just keep it in play again and make a few putts. This course is pretty difficult,” said Rohanna. “It’s super wet though, so I guess it’s playing a tad easier then last year.”
