Rohanna finishes T-22 in Mexico

By Jim Downey, For The Greene County Messenger 2 min read

Robert Rohanna rebounded from a poor third round with a 2-under 70 Sunday in the final round of the San Luis Championship in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

The Waynesburg Central graduate had a four-round total of even-par 288 to move into a tie for 22nd place.

Oscar Fraustro won a three-way playoff with a birdie on the third playoff hole.

Rohanna opened the final round with a bogey, but recovered with three birdies to play the front nine in 2-under 34. He played the back nine even with a bogey and birdie.

“I made a few birdies today, but not enough, haha,” Rohanna said via Facebook Messenger. “I did play pretty good this week.”

Rohanna opened the tournament with rounds of 70 and 70 to make the cut at 4-under 140, but slipped to 76 in Saturday’s third round to enter Sunday at even par.

Rohanna had two double bogeys in the first three holes of the third round, but rallied with two birdies to go out in 2-over 38. He also played the back nine in 38 after three bogeys and a birdie.

“Yeah, two doubles to start (Saturday) didn’t help me,” said Rohanna. “I had a bunch of dumb bogeys from the middle of fairways, but the elevation is tough and the greens are tough. I had way too many 3-putts.”

San Luis Potosi is located in central Mexico, so the tournament was played free of storms, though it rained before the tournament began. The region also did not feel the earthquake in southern Mexico.

“No, we didn’t,” Rohanna said of experiencing the earthquake. “I think the news was lying that they felt it in Texas. We are in between where it landed and Texas, and we didn’t feel a thing.”

Rohanna plans to travel back to Florida, Hurricane Irma permitting. He and his wife Sarah reside in Clearwater, but she is staying with her family in the panhandle until the storm and its aftermath subside.

“I’m going to get my hand looked at again this week. I’m still playing in pain, even with good shots, so just want to see what he has to say,” said Rohanna.

“I’m supposed to fly in to Pensacola … and hopefully see him by the end of the week.”
