Eagles edge Mapletown, 14-12

By For The Greene County Messenger 1 min read

The final difference was Chase McAlpine’s two extra-points Friday night as Avella edged visiting Mapletown, 14-12, in non-conference action.

The loss spoiled a fine performance by the Maples Zach Greene, who rushed for a game-high 180 yards and a touchdown.

The Maples took the early lead on Ethan Carter’s 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but the conversion pass failed.

The Eagles soared ahead later in the quarter when McAlpine’s first extra-point followed Owen English’s 66-yard touchdown gallop. English finished the night with 170 yards rushing.

The teams went scoreless in the second and third quarters, with Mapletown regaining the lead on Greene’s 25-yard run.

However, the two-point pass failed.

Avella rallied later in the fourth quarter when English found Ty Jaworski open for a 45-yard touchdown pass. McAlpine hit the extra-point for the two-point advantage.

The Maples’ final threat was thwarted by an interception with 1:31 left.
