Lady Pioneers’ Watson wins 100th game
West Greene girls basketball coach Jordan Watson secured his 100th career victory Saturday afternoon in the Lady Pioneers’ 74-55 non-section victory over visiting Wheeling Central Catholic.
“I didn’t know I was getting close to 100,” said Watson, who now has a career record of 100-73 in seven seasons. “I tell the girls not to worry about the past. That’s in concrete.
“We worry about this season.”
Watson continued, saying, “I’ve been very blessed to have coached a lot of good players. This group of five seniors — Madison and McKenna Lampe, Bri Goodwin, Kaitlyn Rizor and Savannah Pettit — have been around for 64 wins.
“Also, Justin Allen is the best assistant coach I could dream of.”
West Greene (7-1) rallied for the lead after the third quarter, 52-47, and secured Watson’s benchmark victory with a 22-8 advantage in the final eight minutes.
The visitors led 19-17 after the first quarter and 30-29 at halftime.
“We knew going in the were very talented in the top six, but not deep,” Watson said of Wheeling Central Catholic, who won the West Virginia Class A title last season. “We had 10 fouls in the first half and they were in the double bonus (at the foul line).聽
“The fouls set back to zero in the second half and we started to pressure (defense) in the second half. They got into foul trouble. They didn’t have depth.”
McKenna Lampe led four Lady Pioneers in double figures with 18 points. Madison Lampe scored 17, Elizabeth Brudnock finished with 13, and Kaitlyn Rizor added 10.
Kaylee Reinbeau led Wheeling C.C. with a game-high 25 points. Eden Gainer added 18.
The Lady Pioneers do not play over the Christmas break and return to action on Jan. 3 when they travel to Mapletown.
