Raiders off to good start in section play
Waynesburg Central takes a 1-0 Section 3-AAAA record into the new year after edging defending section champion Belle Vernon, 77-72, in boys basketball action last Friday night.
Lucas Garber poured in a game-high 39 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists for coach Kirk King’s squad, which took a 4-2 overall record into the Christmas break.
The host Raiders trailed 36-34 at halftime but outscored the Leopards, 17-11, in the third to take a 51-47 advantage into the fourth. Waynesburg Central held a 26-25 edge in the fourth.
Belle Vernon had a 17-15 advantage in the first and both teams scored 19 in the second.
Richard Bortz scored 14 and had five assists for Waynesburg Central which also got 11 points from Jimmy Straight.
The Raiders were 26 of 42 at the foul line while Belle Vernon was 13 of 26.
Carmichaels 57, Brentwood 42 — Carmichaels had three players score 12 points in a Section 2-AA victory over visiting Brentwood last Friday night.
The Mikes’ Matt Barrish, Al Cree and Garrett Ponick each had a dozen points, while teammate Dylan Wilson added 11.
Carmichaels (5-2, 1-2) held an 11-6 lead after the first quarter and took a 28-23 advantage into halftime as both teams scored 17 in the second. The Mikes increased their lead to 11 at 41-30 after outscoring Brentwood, 13-7, in the third quarter. Carmichaels had a 16-12 edge in the fourth.
Geibel Catholic 89, Mapletown 64 — Enzo Fetsko scored a game-high 27 points to lead visiting Geibel Catholic to a Section 2-A victory over Mapletown last Friday.
Cole Kendall added 21 points for the Gators (4-2, 2-1). Ryan Anderson (17) and Kaeleb Lehman (13) were also in double figures, and Isaiah Krizner added nine.
Lance Stevenson scored a team-high 15 points for the Maples (0-6, 0-3), while Ryan Tuttle and Ethan Carter tossed in 12 apiece. Matthew Atwood added 10.
Girls basketball
Fort Cherry 37, Carmichaels 32 — Carmichaels cut the deficit down to three in the fourth quarter last Thursday night, but visiting Fort Cherry held off the rally for a Section 3-AA victory.
The Lady Mikes (1-7, 0-2) led 6-2 after the first quarter, but Fort Cherry responded with an 11-7 advantage in the second quarter and 14-9 third quarter for a 27-22 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Both teams scored 10 points in the final quarter.
Gina Ranieri scored 14 points for the Lady Mikes.
West Greene 59, Jefferson-Morgan 5 — West Greene jumped out to a 27-2 lead in the first quarter last Thursday night and then put it on cruise control in the final three quarters in a Section 2-A victory at Jefferson-Morgan.
The Lady Pioneers (6-1, 3-0), who held off their press against the undermanned Lady Rockets, put 11 girls in the scoring column with Madison Lampe’s game-high 12 points leading the way. Kaitlyn Rizor finished with 11 and McKenna Lampe had 10.
Brynn Boyd led the Lady Rockets (1-6, 0-2) with three points.
