As the WPIAL basketball playoffs begin for most teams this weekend, the West Greene girls will have to wait until next Friday to get the postseason started.

The Lady Pioneers (20-2) grabbed the No. 2 seed in Class A and received a first-round bye.

The 20 wins is a school record, for both boys and girls, in a season.

West Greene will play the winner of SaturdayĢƵ game between No. 7 Rochester (12-7) and No. 10 Eden Christian (8-13) on Feb. 23 at a time and site to be determined.

The Lady Pioneers defeated Rochester in last yearĢƵ quarterfinals, 51-37.

“We were hoping for the number two or three seed,” West Greene coach Jordan Watson said. “We played a pretty competitive non-section schedule and I think it helped us that we went 10-0 in our section. The playoffs are a different animal and we are ready for the challenge.”

The other top seeds in Class A that received a first-round bye are No. 1 Winchester Thurston (16-5), No. 3 Quigley Catholic (14-8) and No. 4 Sewickley Academy (13-5).

West Greene fell to Winchester earlier in the season on the road, 58-38, on Jan. 19.

After ending the regular season with a split against California (a 55-45 win) and Charleroi (a 67-40 loss), the Lady Pioneers will have an 11-day layoff before they start the quarterfinals.

“We are going to have some hard practices over the next couple of days and maybe throw in some scrimmages against Washington or Chartiers-Houston,” Watson said. “Our goal is to keep up the intensity and to practice with a ton of energy. These girls went through this last year with the layoff, and I think we will be even better prepared this year.

“Facing the high caliber of teams in Cal and Charleroi will definitely help us for the playoffs. Both of those teams are playoff teams in Double-A and Triple-A. In my opinion in Class A this year, I believe that seeds one through seven are competitive and there will be no gimme games. Every game in the quarterfinals might come down to a single-possession type of game.”
