Eleven days versus 40 years

In Deut 1:2 it says, “It takes 11 days to go from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir Road.” At first glance most of us would say with a shrug, “so? WhatĢƵ the big deal? Who cares? What is the significance of that?” Moses was recounting the Exodus event of when the Israelites were to go into the Promised Land that God had given them and further explains in verses 19-40.

The synopsis is that they sent 12 spies to investigate this new land/home for the people. The spies came back with a fearful report and created unnecessary hysteria among the population who as a group became unwilling and fearful to move ahead and onto what God had for them in spite of everything that they had seen God already do and the assurance that God would go before them.

Read the whole account from Numbers 13:1 – 14:38. There are many directions and quite a few lessons to be learned from this story, walking in fear instead of Faith, disobedience to God, crowd mentality, etc. But I would like to focus on a reality check of the whole time issue. Because of their disobedience, fear, rebellion, etc, what should have taken 11 days, now would take 40 years. What a contrast and tragedy! The losses weren’t just for those fighting men the age of 20 and older who would not enter the Promised Land, but consider how many millions had to wait for the 40 years to end? If you were 10 years old, now you are 50 entering the land. Instead of being born into it 20 years later, now you were born 20 years later and are 20 before entering. By staying the course with GodĢƵ plan and ways, they would have gotten to where God wanted them to be in about 11 days, but instead, it became an arduous 40 year sojourn….. How many of us have either done something similar or became victims of others offenses? How many times could we have gotten through things much quicker, but because of our obstinacy and failings, we end up prolonging our situation? Like asking for forgiveness after we have done wrong, but we maintain a prideful stubborn mentality and stay or become further estranged in relationship. Then we forfeit the promised land of reconciliation.

Eleven days versus 40 years. Many of us would bear witness to the promised land of marital happiness, but because of rebellion against GodĢƵ plan, some go the way of selfishness and unfaithfulness, thereby sacrificing their own place, the partner and potentially that of the children who may be involved. How many delays about GodĢƵ best in peopleĢƵ lives we can point to because of backslidden lifestyles that God will not honor and people take a lifetime to get back on track, if ever. If we would follow GodĢƵ plans, truths, ways, and principles, we could short track ourselves into healthier and happier lives for ourselves and families.

Eleven days versus 40 years. How many children are casualties and can’t have the enjoyment or better quality of life for no fault of their own. They grow up disadvantaged until they are no longer under the effects of someone elseĢƵ choices and behaviors.

Eleven days versus 40 years. How many wasted lives and years because of the undue impact of others that bring us into their sphere of penalty? Sometimes like the Israelites, the thing that provoked the rebellion and fear against God has to die out before we and others can move on, no matter how long it takes.

Eleven days versus 40 years. If we want to get to any promises that God has for us, we need to go the way he wants us to, otherwise, what should take a short while comparatively speaking, may take the better part of our lives. What happens when we or an influencing family member goes against GodĢƵ expressed purposes for our lives is that we delay or deny what his plans are for us. This creates a void, forfeiture or drawback of what should be blessings in our days, moving ahead versus falling behind, 11 days versus 40 years. Make a choice.
