Greene County had a very successful baseball season this spring, as three of the five teams advanced to the WPIAL playoffs.

Carmichaels continued its postseason streak with its 18th straight appearance in the WPIALÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ second season and also took home its first section title since 2013.

Despite some coaching turmoil in the winter, Waynesburg Central was able to regroup and qualify for the playoffs out of Class AAA and finished second in the section behind eventual WPIAL champion Brownsville.

West Greene snapped a long postseason drought and finished fourth in its section for its first playoff berth since the early 1990s.

Despite missing the playoffs, Jefferson-Morgan and Mapletown had solid years with young rosters and will look to break through into the playoff picture next spring.

Team successes always trump individual successes, but I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t acknowledge some of the great individual performances on the diamond in 2018.

So letÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ end the baseball season with the release of the first annual All-Greene County Messenger Baseball Diamond Cutters team.

Matthew Barrish, Carmichaels: The junior lefty was the Mikes’ ace and also a solid two-hole hitter at the plate. On the mound, Barrish posted a 5-2 record with a 1.36 ERA over 36 innings pitched. He led the Mikes with 26 strikeouts and only allowed seven earned runs. Offensively, he scored 15 runs.

Brian Bogden, Mapletown: The senior was the Maples’ top pitcher this spring and took the hill in the most important match-ups. Bogden led the team in strikeouts with 28 and was also a critical part to the Maples offense with a .381 batting average and a team-high 13 RBIs.

Patrick Brady, West Greene: The senior was the Pioneers’ ace this season and was on the rubber in West GreeneÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ hard-fought 5-0 playoff defeat to Cornell. Besides leading West Greene in most pitching statistics, Brady also provided the Pioneers with a lot of consistent power numbers at the plate.

Jacob Broadwater, Jefferson-Morgan: The junior led the young Rockets squad with a team-high .425 batting average and four wins on the rubber. Broadwater was productive almost anywhere in the lineup and also added 11 RBIs and 13 runs scored this season, while striking out 36 batters in the circle.

Al Cree, Carmichaels: The sophomore designated hitter was put in the lineup at the three-hole spot at the beginning of the Mikes’ winning streak during the regular season and was a key cog on offense. Cree batted .439 with 18 RBIs, 20 runs scored and five extra base hits.

Christian Fox, West Greene: Fox was one of the most reliable forces in West GreeneÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ lineup, most of the time hitting out of the three-hole. He was tops on the Pioneers in hits, extra-base hits, total bases and RBIs. The senior also brought a dependable glove with him on the infield this spring.

Zach Gamble, Jefferson-Morgan: With the departure of some key seniors, Gamble took on a bigger role in the lineup and from a leadership point of view. The sophomore could play multiple positions on the diamond and had a steady bat with a .341 batting average, plus 13 RBIs and eight extra base hits.

Devon Jameson, West Greene: The junior picked up the Pioneers biggest win of the season on the mound and he registered six strikeouts in a 7-6 road upset of Jeannette. Whether it was starting or coming on in relief, Jameson provided West Greene with a steady arm and a lot of poise on the rubber.

Nick Mundell, Carmichaels: After having to sit out last season due to a football injury, Mundell came back in full form and was a vital run-producer for the Mikes. For the season, Mundell batted .357 with 17 RBIs, 19 runs scored and five doubles. The senior also played stellar defense in center field.

Gavin Pratt, Carmichaels: The freshman shortstop had a sensational season for Carmichaels and seemed to play his best when the games were the most important. Pratt held a batting average of .328 from his lead-off spot with 14 RBIs, 26 runs scored and seven stolen bases.

Luke Robinson, Waynesburg Central: The sophomore was one of the hardest throwers in Class AAA, as he went 3-1 on the mound with a 1.96 ERA and 34 strikeouts. Robinson also carried a strong bat with him this season, batting .275 with 10 RBIs and five extra-base hits.

Trey Rohanna, Waynesburg Central: Most days Rohanna batted clean-up for the Raiders and was always a tough out for the opposition. The senior could play several positions on the field and led the offense for Waynesburg with a .286 average, 12 RBIs and eight extra-base hits (three home runs).

Dylan Rush, Mapletown: Just like his junior season, Rush held some mind-boggling numbers for the Maples this spring. Rush batted a robust .558 at the plate and led Mapletown in hits (25), runs scored (22) and stolen bases (40). The senior was also a very under-rated defender at shortstop in 2018.

Tyler Rush, Waynesburg Central: The senior catcher was one of three Raiders to play all 15 games in 2018 and was definitely a stalwart behind the plate. He used his small frame to block pitches and was a vocal leader towards the pitching staff. Rush batted .267 and scored 10 runs for Waynesburg this year.

Brandon Turcheck, Waynesburg Central: The senior always brought a stoic and poised presence with him to the field and let his numbers do all of the talking for himself in his final campaign with the Raiders. Turcheck tallied three pitching wins with a 2.27 ERA and carried a .341 batting average at the plate.

Dylan Wilson, Carmichaels: The sophomore was versatile for Coach Dickie Krause this year, as he could play multiple spots on the infield and was also a strong reliever on the mound. At the plate, Wilson posted a .397 batting average with 23 RBIs, seven doubles and 11 stolen bases.
