By For The Greene County Messenger 1 min read

The Waynesburg University softball team lost the opener Wednesday, but won the nightcap for a doubleheader split at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Lee County, Fla.

The Yellow Jackets lost to Elms, 6-3, in the first game, and then rallied for a 4-1 win in the second game against Penn State Altoona.

Waynesburg committed four errors that led to five unearned runs against Elms.

Alex Lawrence led the Yellow Jackets with a pair of doubles, single and an RBI. Courtney Syfert and Cat Allstatt both had a pair of hits in the loss.

Courtney Messenger, who picked up the final two outs in the first game, started the second game. She went the distance, allowing one run on five hits to improve to 3-0.

Rachel Skon went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the victory. Tara Staley and Cheyanne Wasko both finished with two hits.

The Yellow Jackets close the tournament Thursday with games against Drew and Pitt-Bradford.
